The right to be offended

Professed comedians such as Rowan Atkinson and Stephen Fry proclaim that nobody has a right to be offended, they think comedians should be able to say whatever they like – it’s just a joke.

To a certain extent they’re correct, comedians often hold politicians to account better than a journalist whose job it is to do so, and the reason Christmas cracker aren’t funny is that they’re inoffensive, but if you accept that some of your jokes will be offensive to some people you’ve abdicated the right to complain when someone offends you!

I’m pointing the finger more at Stephen Fry, someone I previously admired, because he’s just revealed that he’s Jewish and is offended by Israel being called an apartheid state. You’re a very intelligent guy Stephen, but not smart enough to realise you’re contradicting yourself.

I don’t criticise you because you’re Jewish, or because you’re gay. I’m also aware you have mental health issues for which you have my sympathy. But I will not accept your recent offensive comments regarding Gaza and will remind you that the absence of a right not to be offended goes both ways, I can’t offend you if you choose to be offended!
