Let’s talk about #SocialistSunday

I don’t know who started the hashtag but I embraced it from the very beginning and, although I have had my doubts about whether it served a useful purpose, I’m still here. I felt it incumbent on me, as someone who already had a sizeable following, to support other comrades to build up their following. We had to be very careful at first because we were pestered with intruders – notably from a collective of Zionist trolls named GnasherJew. I created the above meme as a warning, but they were easy to spot and they eventually disappeared after blocking a few.

I didn’t like posting a hashtag and a string of usernames without providing some content. I tried posting a socialist quote, but everyone knows them already. The same goes for songs. So I ended up using #SocialistSunday as a vehicle for promoting my own blogs. It seems to be working quite well, I haven’t had any complaints 😅

I’m not quite managing a new blog every week, my output tends to fluctuate. I have another of my Native American articles to post next week, it would be premature for me to post it now as will become clear. I’m still not ready to right about Your Party, I don’t know if I ever will. Anyone who calls themselves a socialist can either join the party or shut the fuck up!

We don’t have to agree about everything but we should at least agree that what we want is a grassroots democracy dedicated to the socialist principles of public ownership of essential services.

Many of my comrades are of a similar age to myself, we might not be able to participate in the protests that see people older than us arrested on terrorism charges. We have to do what we can even if it’s only signing a petition or donating what you can afford to a crowdfunding campaign.

I’m not fully committed to Your Party but I would like to see it succeed. I’m getting tired of the bickering within the party, which seem to be resolved for now, and the opportunistic comments of those who would like to see it fail. I feel that several comrades are falling into this trap.

Get out of the way if you can’t lend a hand, for the times they are a-changing

Solidarity means more than sharing a hashtag, we can disagree within the basic tenets of socialism: From each according to their ability, to each according to their need.

We don’t all have the same abilities, nor do we have the same needs, but it’s incumbent on us to support each other however we can.

Many comrades are also friends, and I post an #ff every week. I’ve been posting a collection of pictures with a Yorkshire theme for over a decade without repetition. Many deserve repeating so I do that on Monday.

I find it awkward working on two platforms – and I’m continually getting notifications by email of friend requests on Facebook – but I have to accept things are rather than how I’ld like them to be. We need to work within a paradigm until we can figure out how to break free .

You’re  invited to join me on Bluesky if you’re so inclined, there will be other comrades to greet you https://go.bsky.app/PNyNcDW

I used to post a Daily Quote until I passed it on to couple of friends. I’ve recently been posting quotes that I had saved on my IPad prior to deleting them and I’m considering reverting to what I did previously.

  1. Thank you Mike, I love seeing Socialist Sunday still going strong, it is a reminder of our aims but also of our comradship. I wish Your Party all the best in its progression. It seems to be trying to be an umbrella for socialists of all ilks. That leads me to the question of what is a socialist. To me it is the believe in the equality of all men and women. With that comes the defeat of capitalism. Solidarity. Ps I always enjoy your quotes x

    1. There’s a hint for a new blog: What is socialism? But I doubt if I could explain it in a way that would be understood by the antisocialist, antimuslim bigots attacking Zarah in New York. I may resume Daily Quotes in the New Year, although it was only meant to be temporary 😀
