Online Security
There’s no doubt that children need to be protected from harmful content but government proposals are simultaneously insufficient and inadequate. Government, as is so often the case, are taking the easy route of penalising victims instead of pursuing influential perpetrators. Many rape survivors will understand.
Lisa Nandy, Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport, has abdicated her responsibility and decided to quit X because: “A platform originally designed for free speech and expression now favours abuse and misinformation over meaningful debate. It isn’t healthy for our democracy or our communities and I don’t want to support it.”
I retain my X account only to stay in touch with old comrades, but I’ld gladly see it banned rather than to be shut out as collateral damage in online protection legislation.
A blanket ban on internet access for under 16s would require everyone to provide proof of age. In my case I would need to apply for a digital ID as I don’t have a passport or credit card. I live alone and I’m practically housebound, without internet access I would not be able to shop online and would find it difficult to access my bank account.
Many platforms already have age restrictions and YouTube doesn’t allow nudity at all. There are many more reasons for reasons for banning antisocial media like X.
Warfare or Welfare?
We’re being told that national security requires increased spending on ‘defence’ and, as usual, it’s the poorest who will pay. Instead of taxing the wealthy, who are more likely to benefit from increased investment in the armaments industry, we’re expected to fund it by cuts to our social security safety net at home and humanitarian aid abroad. There is no military defence against poverty, sickness, ignorance and persecution of minorities at home. Many who call themselves Christians refuse to feed the multitude if it means upsetting the money changers!
There’s no such thing as a nuclear deterrent, we won’t know as long as it’s not used. If we’re attacked first the deterrent didn’t work, and a preemptive strike by ‘our’ side would disprove the notion of a nuclear deterrent.
Defence against our own government
We’ve reached a point where our police no longer serve to protect us, we’re more likely to be prosecuted for protesting against governmental criminality! This video tells us that 90% of reported crimes are not investigated because police are busy investigating ‘non-crime hate incidents’!

It’s quite evident that police would rather arrest pensioners for holding up placards supporting Palestine Actions than violent far right rioters encouraged by the world’s on trillionaire, and the government would rather persecute doctors who speak up for Palestine than investigate British citizens returning from service with the IDF.
Thank you for the blog Mike. I am not sure the clamp down on social media sites is for the protection of children but more on obtaining mass surveilance of the population. We are no longer allowed to protest freely on the street and now even our voices online will be smothered.
I have no passport or personal ID, so will have difficulty signing in to many sites. It is quite obvious to me money needs to be spent on welfare not warfare. Homeless people live on our streets. Many children are still hungry and cold in winter. Yet we must defend ourseves against hoards of Russians, muslims and Chinese who wish us harm to do us harm. This is delusionary rubbish, invented by our warmongering government. Solidarity ✊
