Mike’s Diary 22 June – 3 July

Monday 22 June

Despite swearing he would fight any leadership Cur Starmer has resigned as Prime Minister, after waffling on about his ‘achievements’. I couldn’t listen to his speech, it was pitiful. He still can’t admit that he’s been tried and found wanting.

Whilst the Government is in chaos, the Green Party is firmly focused on taking on Reform in the Greater Manchester Mayoral election.

Andy Burnham will be PM in a matter of weeks without a leadership contest as Wes Streeting, the only other contendant with sufficient support, announced that he would back him for the job. Starmer indicated that he would quit by the end of the parliamentary session in mid-July if there was no requirement for an internal election to choose his successor.

Burnham needs to introduce proportional representation before, not after, the next general election if he wants to remain as Prime Minister. It will be too late afterwards!

What can we expect from Andy Burnham as Prime Minister?

We can’t expect him to be perfect, and he’s going to make mistakes. But if he does some of the things we suggest — and I’ve got a few other ideas too — that would be rather good news

A court in Texas given sentences up to 100 years in prison to ‘antifa terrorists”, with some sentences to be served consecutively. I don’t need to point out the absurdity of the sentence as well as the injustice. Apparently lightning fireworks on 4th July can be an act of terrorism in Texas!

Three judges with the International Criminal Court filed a lawsuit in a US federal court against Trump and his administration, challenging the sanctions Trump placed on them over their judicial decisions regarding investigations into war crimes by Israel and the US.

The judges argue that the sanctions are extrajudicial measures meant to punish and coerce them. The restrictions cut them off from banking, online platforms, travel booking, and sometimes health insurance which they are calling  a “financial death penalty.”

Greens will NOT work with Labour if Burnham continues to support Israel. Zack Polanski said the genocide in Gaza is a “red line”and any co-operation with Burnham would be impossible unless he admits Israel is committing genocide.
